About The Coalition For Cheaper Books

The Coalition for Cheaper Books was formed to campaign for the removal of parallel importation restrictions on books in Australia. We are a group of booksellers made up of the major book store chain Dymocks as well as the Discount Stores of Woolworths, Kmart, Coles and Big W. Together we sell 40% of books in Australia. We formed the Coalition because we believe our customers want cheaper book prices. Our membership represents many Australian workers, franchisees and small, family owned businesses which support the removal of the restrictions on parallel importation of books. We have also received strong support for the campaign from our customers and booklovers around Australia.

I was initially curious about this site and motivation, but on reading that it was a coalition involvling Woolworths, Kmart, Coles and Big W, you know this is only about increasing profits at these chains, and not about the Australian book industry or Australian book lovers. Yes I agree that book prices in Australia are inflated, but to assist these companies in their pursuit of profits won’t help matters. Dymocks associating it’s name with these supermarkets (NOT “booksellers”!) is only confirming it’s “supermarket” attitude to selling, and unfortunately only lowers them to the standards of the rest of their “coalition”.
