Quote
Why are you comparing Book Depository prices with the likes of Dymocks, Booktopia and A&R? Surely if you’re going to do a comparison like this then you have to use like for like stores, anything else is just plain deception! Why dont you tell us how the Book Depository prices comapre with BigW, Target and KMart prices?
Unquote

Yes, I have done the comparison's online sites are still cheaper than Big W, Target and Kmart prices - by at least $3-$5 a book on a regular basis. (Not always, but usually)

$3 a book doesn't sound like much does it, but at $3 a book each week on pay day that's $156 a year! That's quiet a few 'extra' books that I can buy over the course of a year!

I was initially curious about this site and motivation, but on reading that it was a coalition involvling Woolworths, Kmart, Coles and Big W, you know this is only about increasing profits at these chains, and not about the Australian book industry or Australian book lovers. Yes I agree that book prices in Australia are inflated, but to assist these companies in their pursuit of profits won't help matters. Dymocks associating it's name with these supermarkets (NOT "booksellers"!) is only confirming it's "supermarket" attitude to selling, and unfortunately only lowers them to the standards of the rest of their "coalition".

You need to provide a response in the wake of the Government's decision on the Productivity Commission report. Never has a government been so guilty of protecting the interests (and excessive profit margins) of the overseas owners of Australian publishing houses (a fact that seems to escape so many critics!). Let's just hope, as the government so guilelessly pointed out, that we all buy our books online at Amazon, BetterWorld Books, Book Despository and eBay and hasten the demise of this ridiculous protectionism that really does no favours for consumers.

Books in Australia are overpriced, the idea that this is to support local talent is ridiculous. It is the same argument used to shield other Australian industries from overseas competition in the 70s.
It would be better to allow for publishers' and writers'subsidies than to impose these completely unfair price mechanisms on books.
I have just returned from the US and the array and diversity of book titles available as well as the almost 1/2 price was incredible. This form of protection is basically creating a false economy. It also reduces the number of titles available and thus the options for the reader.

its all well and good, but what I would like to see is a Publishing house for Australian Authors to publish their own works in their own back yard ,in each of our major cities and the larger country towns ( eg Toowoomba) the Cost of Importing a book to Australia is huge when you can get it Cheaper when on holiday in Europe ( I delibratly exclude America as it not part of the EU )

Books are more expensive in Australia. e.g. Neal Stephenson paperback
$US7.99 at amazon, $A38 at local bookstores - I bought from Amazon.

So its nice to find someone who can properly articulate my feelings towards local bookstores - 4th post down in this link :)

As a small business bookseller, I struggle to compete with Amazon and the Book Depository. The prices I pay for wholesale are more expensive that what I would pay to Amazon. My price comparing customers always leave disappointed especially when the books are like $50 to $100 more expensive than what they can get online!
